These days, you can access the internet from almost anywhere. With so many free mapping programs available online, there's no longer any excuse for getting lost. Even if you don't have a GPS, you can still use your smart phone or laptop computer to find the luxury real estate in Toronto you're supposed to be taking a look at. Wi-Fi and 3G are the most common methods for getting online outside the home. Here are some tips on connecting to it for navigation and other purposes.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi, or wireless networking, is an increasingly common method of connecting to the internet that allows wireless equipped devices to communicate with internet routers that are within broadcast range using signals sent through the air. Many people have wireless networks within their Toronto real estate and many public places, such as cafes, libraries, and public internet sites also have wireless networks. Some cities, such as Minneapolis and Grand Haven, Michigan, even have city-wide networks.
Accessing a wireless network from your Wi-Fi capable device, such as a laptop or e-reader, is free, which is the major advantage of this method. The internet bill is paid by the owner of the router, whether that's you, your neighbor, the coffee shop owner, or the city and the price is not dependant on how much data you transfer. You can easily access the wireless networks from other people's Edmonton homes as long as they're not password protected, but beware of broadcasting sensitive information over these types of connections.
3G
3G, which stands for 3rd generation, is the mobile telecommunications standard in most of the world, with some regions, such as Europe and the USA, already transitioning to 4G. Using a compatible device, usually a smart phone or some e-readers, someone at an English as a second language school can access the internet through this system as well as send photos, text messages and make calls. The device communicates with the internet through a 3G tower within range of the device.
The major disadvantage with using 3G to access the internet is that you are charged extra on your cell phone bill for the privilege. Most data plans offered by cell phone companies charge depending on how much data is transferred, and the cheapest plans are sometimes $50 or more above the cost of standard cell service. For someone who owns a Parsippany car service, though, it can be essential, because the range of 3G towers is much larger than that of Wi-Fi routers.
